R&D has successfully trained thousands of adults with developmental disabilities to access the public transit systems within their communities. Trainees are trained to utilize public transit systems between their home and an instructional facility, or place of business.
Travel Training results in far-reaching benefits. The Regional Center and/or School District benefits when seats become available on the curb-to-curb service for riders who cannot participate in mobility training. This brings the agency cost containment while continuing to serve the needs of their community. Those who participate in the training, benefit from a more independent lifestyle, increased confidence, better employment options, and the opportunity to expand their social activities. Finally, the public transit agencies benefit from the increase in riders, a win for all.
